Why Is My Sprinkler Zone Not Working?

When one sprinkler zone goes silent while the others run fine, the problem is almost always local to that zone — the valve, its wiring, or the controller terminal driving it. Here's how to think through it.

Start at the controller

First, check that the controller is actually sending power to that zone. Run a manual test on the suspect zone and listen for the solenoid click at the valve box. No click means the controller terminal, the wire, or the solenoid itself is the issue.

Check the valve solenoid

The solenoid is the small cylinder on top of the zone valve that opens and closes it when energized. A failed solenoid won't click and won't open the valve. Solenoids are a common, straightforward replacement.

Inspect the wiring

Corroded, chewed, or cut wires between the controller and valve prevent the zone from activating. Rodent damage and corroded splices in valve boxes are frequent culprits in Central Florida.

Look for a stuck valve

Sometimes the valve is getting power but the internal diaphragm is stuck closed from debris. Manually opening the valve with the bleed screw confirms the valve can flow — if it does, the issue is electrical or in the diaphragm.
