Why Do My Sprinklers Have Low Pressure?

Weak, misting, or short-throw sprinklers usually mean the system isn't getting the pressure it needs. The cause can be simple or serious — here's a logical way to narrow it down.

Is it one zone or all of them?

If only one zone has low pressure, the cause is local — a leak in that zone's lateral, a partially open valve, or clogged heads. If every zone is weak, the issue is upstream: the main supply, pump, or pressure regulator.

Check for leaks

A cracked pipe or weeping valve bleeds off pressure before it reaches the heads. A soggy patch of lawn or an unusually green circle often marks an underground leak.

Inspect nozzles and screens

Clogged nozzle screens from sand and debris are a top cause of low pressure on individual heads. Cleaning or replacing nozzles often restores coverage.

Evaluate the pump

On pump systems, a worn impeller, failing motor, or suction problem reduces output to every zone. A pump losing prime or short-cycling needs professional attention.
